Specialized care for infant tongue ties and craniofacial growth in children

by Dr. Rebekah Ehde at Camarillo Smiles

What is a tongue tie?

A tongue tie, medically known as ankyloglossia, is a condition present at birth where a band of tissue (the lingual frenulum) attaching the tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter, tighter, or thicker than usual. This condition may restrict the tongue's range of motion, affecting functions like breastfeeding, oral motor skills, and even breathing patterns in infants. It can even affect how a child’s face and airway grow. Early diagnosis and appropriate management can significantly improve a child's oral health and overall well-being.
